How can acupuncture help me to stop smoking?
I found an interesting video by Dr.Linda on this topic. I liked it and sharing it for your reference.
Since the invention of cigarettes, people have been addicted to them. The reason is nicotine – a highly addictive substance that some say is just as hard to kick as heroin. It wouldn't be so bad if smoking weren't so unhealthy. However, smoking is unhealthy – even deadly.
Over 80 percent of lung cancers are preventable because they are caused by smoking. Smoking also causes premature aging, emphysema, bronchitis and a host of other maladies. Not only that, but smoking stains your fingers, teeth and makes your clothes stink. The good news is that acupuncture to stop smoking can help.
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for thousands of years to treat all kinds of different conditions. Today many people turn to acupuncture to help them kick the habit.
Acupuncture uses small needles of different lengths and sizes to stimulate the skin in a particular area of the human body. These needles are so tiny and thin they are virtually painless. Most people cannot even feel them being inserted or taken out and find their sessions relaxing.
The points on your body that will be triggered by the acupuncture needles depend on what your smoking cessation symptoms are. For example, some people experience physical symptoms like headaches and nausea. Others have mostly psychological symptoms like cravings and irritability. Of course, you can have both physical and emotional symptoms that can be treated through acupuncture sessions. Each treatment is designed especially for the individual being treated.
Choose a licensed acupuncture specialist if you want to go this route. The first thing you should do is consult with the acupunturist about your desire to stop smoking, or your side effects if you already have stopped. They will explain the process to you and answer any questions you may have. Often multiple sessions are required for maximum effect. Also, some acupuncturists recommend herbal remedies to be used in between sessions. Do not use any herbs without asking your doctor if you are on prescription medication.
Whether or not you use other techniques along with acupuncture to stop smoking should be decided in conjunction with your regular physician and your acupuncture specialist. You may decide, or not, to supplement your acupuncture treatments with prescription medicine or nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation. Some people are able to use acupuncture only to successfully give up cigarettes for good.
Some acupuncturists recommend herbs and supplements as part of their stop smoking treatments so as to control the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. For instance, some acupuncturists recommend green tea for the duration of the detoxification period to discourage the body from going through nicotine cravings. Soothing tonics are sometimes recommended by acupuncturists because of their ability to lubricate the lungs and mouth, therefore halting the craving of smoking cigarettes. Herbal medicines to decease the stressfulness of attempting to quit smoking and bring the body into balance are also frequently recommended.
